Petra was born and worked in the Netherlands, a country where every new family has the option of in-home maternity care as soon as the baby is born. After 18 months of training she became certified to assist midwives during home and hospital births and help parents with the challenges of growing into a bigger family. Coming into a family’s life after a baby is born is a privilege that she never takes for granted.

Petra also worked in a major hospital where midwives were trained. The maternity care nurses created a nurturing home setting for the new parents and for the student midwives to understand what it means to support new families through their postpartum time. Here, on the maternity care floor she worked closely with nurses, midwives, OB/GYN doctors and pediatricians. In addition, Petra learned from working with families from different cultures and backgrounds, collecting the best of alternative ideas and effective, time tested practices.

In Canada she continued training and became a CAPPA Certified Postpartum Doula (CCPD). Working with new families is her passion. Petra knows how important it is to have somebody to reassure and answer the many questions of a new parent. Watching a family grow and thrive is very rewarding to her. Through continuing education she stays up to date regarding breastfeeding, formula feeding, infant and child CPR and other doula related topics like maternal health, mental health and taking care of multiples.
When CAPPA introduced the New Parent Education course she jumped into it right away. Preparing parents prenatal about everything they can expect as soon as their baby arrives is a great opportunity for them to be prepared and set reasonable expectations for their postpartum period.

When working with her Postpartum clients, Petra saw how many new parents struggle with their child’s sleep. She wants to be sure that her clients are getting the best support possible during these often challenging times. She found that the International Parenting and Health Institute gave her the knowledge she needs to support each family in their own unique way. Whenever there is an opportunity to learn more about sleep Petra will take that as it helps her to develop a broader understanding of sleep and that results in her being able to support her clients better. Understanding the pre and postpartum period gives her an advantage when working on sleep with her clients as sleep can be affected by many different factors. She is part of a Professional Pediatric Sleep Consultants group where they collaborate and explore new ideas with each other to better support their clients.

When Petra is not busy interacting and taking care of her clients she spends time with her two sons and husband. They all love to bake and like to share their baked goods with her clients. She loves traveling to warm beaches and a vacation is even better when she can visit her relatives and friends in Europe at the same time. Recently they have added a Jack Russell Terrier to their family and he makes sure that everyone stays active. Joey loves chasing the squirrels in their backyard while Petra enjoys her coffee.

Suyin Jordan

CCPD, CAPPA Faculty Member LE CCCE
Certified Maternity and Child Sleep Consultant
New Parent Educator

Suyin left Malaysia for England aged 23 where she trained as a nurse and then a midwife. She worked in the UK for over 19 years as a nurse and midwife and has delivered over 100 babies both in hospitals as well as home-births.

Suyin came to Canada in 2010 and was asked to help support mother who was finding things difficult after the birth of her twin baby boys. She soon realized that many people in Toronto and the GTA did not have much support in the postpartum period – especially if their health care provider was an OBGYN. She decided to pursue a career as a doula and certified as a postpartum doula with the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA). This training coupled with her previous training and experience as a nurse and midwife has made Suyin one of the most respected and sought after doulas in the GTA.

Suyin continues to train and keep herself up to date with evidence-based practice and has certified as a Childbirth Educator and will soon become a certified New Parent Educator. During her work as a doula, many parents would enquire about baby sleep so in 2019, Suyin qualified as a maternity and child sleep consultant with the International Parenting and Health Institute (IPHI). Suyin is also a CAPPA faculty member and has now trained other postpartum doulas, whom she supports and mentors as they start their new career paths.

Suyin has two amazing children of her own, now in their 20s. She often reflects on when they were born in the UK, and how her mother came to help look after her and the family for 3 months. Suyin did not realize it at the time, but her mother was playing the role of a postpartum doula; taking over the running of the house which allowed time for Suyin and her husband to bond with their brand new babies during such an overwhelming time.

Suyin is passionate about giving parents the tools and knowledge to ease parents into parenthood. She does this to empower parents by providing practical help, support and knowledgeable advice as well as helping them navigate through the information jungle that is the internet and social media.

Suyin speaks several languages including English, Malay, Hokkien,
Cantonese and some Mandarin. Her hobbies include Knitting & crochet, scrabble on-line, cooking and healthy eating, yoga, fitness and looking after the family pets. Her mission is to feed the world and show kindness to all. If Suyin could have her life over again she would be a farmer; be self sufficient, growing all kinds of produce while looking after the farm animals.
